I’m in Salt Lake right now. The supah-cool SLC Library to be exact. I walked into Newark airport at 4:45pm yesterday and landed at the SLC airport 2:30pm today. Wha?

Well my flight last night was getting more and more delayed so when they asked for volunteers to be bumped I took their offer. We were offered first class tickets on a flight leaving at 7:45am connecting through Houston and arriving at 1:22pm. We also got hotel, meal and $300 travel vouchers. I’ve never done this before and had I been wise I would have just had my parents pick me up on their way home from buying my mom’s new copper-red hardtop miata and come back to get my travel voucher. Instead I waited on the customer service line for over 2.5 hours. So many people missed connections. I felt really bad for all of these people who were losing days on these big european vacations. I got the last hotel room and a bunch of people jammed into a van to go to the Radisson Piscataway. Oy! We got there at around 1am and I had to be on the 5am shuttle so I got about 3 hours of sleep. I had some time at the airport to use my vouchers. I had a $6 and $12 voucher. My totals were $5.88 and $11.91. Score!

First class rocks! The first flight was on a big plane where we had our own monitors. There was sooo much room and we had a multicourse breakfast. My second flight was delayed about an hour and was a smaller plane where first class was much less exciting.

Anyway I arrived in SLC and got my bags from the baggage desk. Got my rental car and drove up to centerville to get my nails done. I also did a wee bit of shopping at target. I have a few hours to kill before I need to go pick up Amanda at the airport so I headed to the library. Yay for free wifi.

Normally it closes at 6pm on friday but they are open until midnight for a big harry potter event. There’s signs and stuff all over and people are dressed up. I couldn’t care less about Harry Potter but I’m happy about the library being open. I should take some photos.

I went to see the movie SK8 Life with my friends in SLC last night. I figured I had to go see something at the Sundance Film Festival, because everyone back home keeps asking if I’m going. I’m heading to Vegas on Sunday and then I’ll be in Colorado the rest of the week for X-Games, so this was my only chance. Tickets were sold out, so my roommate and I went 2 hours early to get Wait List numbers. We were there before they were handing them out so we walked around and when we got back there were 3 people on line. However some older guy came around and wanted to sell 3 tickets so we bought 2.

We got pretty good seats with Caitlin, James, Liz and Devin. So there was some debate about whether this was a fictional film or a documentary. Turns out it’s a fictional film made with real skateboarders who are, in effect, playing themselves. The premise of the movie is that an older skater is going to lose his house, which is called the crashpad, due to back taxes. He has some teen skaters come stay there and they have a month to film footage to raise money. The bottom line is good skating, bad acting. I also had the impression that the editors had just gotten a new video program and wanted to try out every single special effect in it. I thought the cartoon aspects were ok, but all the stylized and sketch filters were really annoying. It was cool to see the entire trick in one shot and not your usual stunt double switcheroo. I also commend the director for showing how often skaters crash when trying new tricks, and how much commitment it takes to nail it. The director did say there will be SK8 Life: The skaters cut on their website with more skating and no special effects. Holla!

Oh and I won a SK8 Life skateboard deck for knowing that Spike Jonze directed Video Days (which was also in the credits).

As I was driving up to Brighton today I remarked to my roomate about how I’ve seen a few east coast plates here and there in Utah, but not any other NJ plates. We got to the mountain and started getting our gear on when a guy walking by says something to me that I didn’t quite catch the first (or third) time. I finally figured out that he was saying where in Jersey are you from, and then I turn around and see his white Isuzu parked behind me has jersey plates.

There goes that theory. The guy said he just moved to Utah from someplace near Princeton.

Well the roads of SLC are numbered as roads radiate from Temple Square in downtown salt lake city.

So I live on 600 N 200 W. And an address is often given as say 1350E 3300S. Now this may seem easy in theory but it’s really easy to get confused. So I was quite proud the other day when I found my way to the comcast office to pick up my self install kit. Heidi was proud.
