gardening 2006!

In an effort to simplify my web presence I have rolled all my former gardening blog posts into this big blog. They are now available under the gardening category.

Last weekend I took my mom to Gro Rite in Lincoln Park and spent $188 on flowers. Then on sunday Vanessa and I spent a good 5 hours planting everything. It was a lot of work, and yet soo much less work than it was last summer when we basically started all those gardens from scratch. Plus my parents yard has giant tree roots EVERYWHERE. So it’s a nightmare to dig. My mom must have really appreciated it since she sent me a card and $20. I also broke my fiskars spade, which I think is lifetime guaranteed. I need to remember to look that up.
So today I decided to work on my garden. I’ve been holding back since they’ve been doing work on the back of the building and basically made a huge mess back there. But I have to get started. So today I went to Target and bought some new pots for my fire escape, then I went to the 14th St Garden Center in JC. I’ve never been there before but it’s got nice stuff. I picked up some plants for hanging basket. Then I went to Home Depot for potting soil and lots more plants.

I came home and got to work. First I potted a tomato plant and hibiscus I got at Gro Rite. Then I planted the petunias, vincas, and geraniums in my big pots. Then I dug up the Lemon Balm, Orange Mint, and Apple Mint out of my herb garden. Those are just taking the garden over. The lemon balm is like 3 feet high. I put the bigger plant in a pot, and the other in a smaller one that I’m going to offer to my mom. I also potted the mints. I’ve got extra apple and orange mint if anyone wants some. I had also bought some regular mint and a chocolate mint that I put into pots.

I had to repot my strawberry plant since the pot it was in wasn’t draining at all. I have another big pot that doesn’t drain but I’ll save that for another day. I did some other stuff, but the yard is such a mess that I don’t want to do too much for fear they will get trampled. I need to talk to the building manager about what is going on back there.
